At Beach Kids Dentistry, we believe that healthy smiles equal healthy kids! We are passionate about helping your child grow strong, healthy teeth and gums. In addition to providing oral health care screenings and cleanings, we educate patients and their parents on good oral hygiene habits that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

Infant Oral Health Care

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that your baby’s first dental visit occurs within six months of their first tooth eruption or by their first birthday. During infant oral health care visits, our team will perform an examination of your baby’s mouth to ensure the teeth and gums are developing properly. We also can provide guidance for oral hygiene and teething.

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative treatments are an important part of taking care of your child’s oral health in the event there is decay. The goal of restorative dentistry is to help restore functionality, and strengthen and improve the appearance of damaged or decayed teeth. Ultimately, we want your child’s smile to last for a lifetime. We offer a range of pediatric restorative dental treatments including fillings, crowns, pulpotomy, extractions and space maintainers.

In these instances, we offer hospital services. Our hospital services include general anesthesia administered at our partner hospitals, the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and the Virginia Beach Ambulatory Surgery Center

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Pediatric Dental Services

When it comes to your child’s dental health, it’s normal to have questions! Below you can find answers to commonly asked questions about pediatric dentistry services and our practice.

The first dental visit, which the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends occurring by your child’s first birthday, or within six months of the eruption of your child’s first tooth, aims to introduce your child to the dentist in a positive way. It typically involves a brief examination of your child’s mouth and teeth, a discussion on oral hygiene practices and guidance for parents on how to care for your child’s teeth and gums. We also familiarize you with our team and our office during your child’s first appointment! We often use a lap to lap exam for infants, which involves the child lying on their back looking towards their caregiver while their head is in the dentist’s lap. This allows us to examine an infant’s oral cavity while allowing them to feel as though they are still in their caregiver’s arms.

Baby teeth, also called primary teeth, serve several important functions, including helping with speech development, proper nutrition and guiding the eruption of permanent teeth. They are just as important to care for as the permanent teeth!

Preventing cavities in children involves good oral hygiene practices, parent-assisted brushing until the age of 8 or 9, brushing twice a day and flossing once a day, eating a balanced diet and visiting the dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings.

Before your baby’s first tooth appears, clean their gums after each feeding. You can use a clean, damp washcloth or a soft gauze pad to gently wipe their gums.

Once the first tooth erupts, you should start brushing. Use an infant toothbrush with soft bristles and a small head and brush gently, making sure to clean all tooth surfaces. Around the age of one, you should start using a very small amount of toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice.

If your child uses a pacifier or sucks their thumb, consult with your dentist for guidance on when and how to wean them from these habits to prevent dental issues.

Being able to accurately see your child’s teeth is important when it comes to caring for them! Dental X-rays are generally safe, and our team takes precautions to minimize radiation exposure, which is minimal.

If your child has a damaged or decayed tooth, we may recommend a restorative dental service to restore functionality and appearance. Some treatments we may recommend include crowns, pulpotomy, extractions and space maintainers. In addition to fixing function and cosmetics, these services can help improve your child’s overall oral health.

Common dental emergencies include a situation that causes your child to lose a tooth, toothaches, cuts on the mouth and other dental trauma. Visit our dental emergencies page for guidance on how to adequately treat most of these situations until you can visit our office. However, if you are unsure of how to treat a dental emergency or unsure if you should go to the hospital, you can always give us a call. We always have a dentist on-call for any patients on record.
