Your First Pediatric Dental Visit

Welcome To Beach Kids Dentistry In VA, Beach

Welcome to Beach Kids Dentistry! We look forward to seeing you and your family in our office for your first visit. If your child is a new patient, we understand that they may feel a little nervous. We want to make sure that your child’s first visit with us is not only fun and memorable, but also safe and comfortable. Our ultimate goal is to help your child develop a positive, life-long attitude toward their dental health.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child first visit a dentist six months after the eruption of their first tooth, or by the time of their first birthday. Early visits provide a steady foundation for a lifetime of healthy dental habits. During your first visit, you can expect:

  • A Positive Experience: We will focus on introducing your child to the office and to their dentist. First and foremost, our goal is to establish our office as a positive experience for your child. Sometimes, this means moving at a slower pace and taking the time for your child to feel as comfortable as possible so that they can be cooperative and feel safe during their future visits.

  • Previous Dental Experience Discussion: We understand that your child may have previously visited a pediatric dentist. We kindly request that you inform us of any previous dental experiences your child has had and also let us know how cooperative your child has been in the past. This will help us to understand your child’s anxiety levels during their first visit with us, which will guide us in fostering a positive attitude during treatment.

  • Dental Exam And Cleaning: During your first visit, we will examine your child’s mouth and check their teeth, gums and tongue. We may also need to take X-rays. Then, we will clean your child’s teeth. We will check for any plaque buildup that may need to be removed and administer a fluoride treatment to keep your child’s teeth healthy. In addition to the cleaning, we will explain ways to help keep your child’s oral health in tip-top shape at home in kid-friendly terms.

Preparing Your Child For Their First Visit

Is your child nervous before their first visit with us? We understand that it may take some time for your child’s anxiety to ease and for them to feel comfortable at our office. To help soothe your child’s anxiety, we recommend avoiding any negative words or terms that may make our office seem like a scary place to visit. These include:

  • Pain

  • Hurt

  • Pull

  • Drill

  • Needle

Sticking to positive terms will help ease any anxiety your child may have, and we recommend positively reinforcing your child with plenty of praise, as well. We also encourage you to join in on your child’s first visit to ensure that they are as comfortable as possible. However, after your first visit, we recommend that you stay in the waiting room during your child’s visit, unless they need some extra reassurance. This gives us the opportunity to get to know your child, to earn their trust and to help them gain the confidence they need to have successful visits and dental health in the future.
