Dental Crowns

Repairing Damaged Teeth In Virginia Beach

In the case of extensive tooth decay or a larger cavity, your child may need a dental crown. Crowns restore functionality and appearance to a decayed or otherwise damaged tooth. We understand that any dental procedure can be daunting for your child, which is why our pediatric dentists help them feel relaxed during their restorative dentistry treatment.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Crowns are prefabricated coverings that are placed over a child’s damaged or decayed tooth. They help to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance and prevent additional wear. At Beach Kids Dentistry our dentists use the following types:

  • Stainless Steel: Made of metal, these are used on the back teeth due to their durability and ability to function as normal primary molars.

  • Zirconia: Tooth-colored porcelain crowns that can be used on certain primary molars.

Reasons Your Child Might Need A Dental Crown

Most commonly, caps are used when a tooth has extensive decay that a filling cannot adequately repair. Placing a covering will help protect the tooth from further damage. However, our pediatric dentists may recommend this treatment for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Broken Teeth: These devices can protect and restore teeth that have been significantly damaged due to accidents or injuries.

  • Pulpotomy: In cases where a baby tooth undergoes a pulpotomy, a treatment similar to a root canal, the covering may be placed to protect the tooth.

  • Weakened Teeth: They can help strengthen and support weak teeth, which some children may have due to genetic factors.

  • Prevent Further Decay: Covering the remaining tooth structure can help prevent new decay from occurring.

Placing Your Child’s Dental Crown

The process of placing a pediatric crown involves several steps and will be completed in one appointment. After evaluating your child to determine the type of cap they need, the next steps are typically as follows:

Your pediatric dentist will prepare the tooth receiving the crown by removing the decayed and damaged parts and shaping the tooth.

Our prefabricated crowns come in many different sizes. Much like shoes on your feet, different sizes may need be tried on to you child’s tooth to ensure the best fit.

The crown is cemented onto your child’s tooth. Typically it will remain in place until your child naturally loses the tooth.

Our pediatric dentists will make sure it fits and feels good and make adjustments as necessary.

What You Can Do To Prevent The Need For A Crown

There are several steps you can take now to be proactive in preventing the need for a dental crown. Here are a few ways you can incorporate healthy oral habits into your child’s everyday routine:

  • Brushing/Flossing: It may seem like common sense to brush twice and floss daily, but doing these two things can help keep bacteria away, maintaining the health and function of your child’s natural tooth.

  • Routine Dental Cleanings: Make sure your child pays a visit to our office twice a year for routine dental cleanings. This also allows us to monitor the condition of your child’s teeth and take early action if need be.

  • Avoid Sticky/Crunch Foods: It’s best to stay away from popcorn and candies like gummies and caramel. That’s because the food tends to stick in between your teeth in those hard-to-reach places.

Recovery

After the procedure, you can give your child over-the-counter pain medication to help relieve any discomfort. Some bleeding around the gums is expected and may last for a week or two. Instruct them to brush and floss their teeth normally, and contact us with any questions or concerns.
